Questions on Disability

QUESTIONS:


  1. In Liz Crow article"Disability in Literature" she claims that the current portrayal of disability in children's book continue to fail us. It is under-represented and mis-represented. What strategies can we use to change this?
  2. Analyzing the idea of Bad Vs Good, having a disability is associated with being " bad". For example: Captain Hook was portrayed as a dangerous and malicious pirate who had a disability. In a classroom, how can we use these figures such as Captain Hook, the Hunchback of Notre Dame to deconstruct  these stereotypes?
  3. When studying the idea of " able " and "disabled".What kind of activities to explore this should I use instead of presenting a lecture?

Nice is not enough

  As we all know educational equality exists everywhere, but it is intensified in public school system because they have to accept every student that wishes to attend.As James Banks explains, “students learn best and are more highly motivated when the school curriculum reflects their cultures, experiences, and perspectives”. However, public schools struggle to teach equally to the varied cultural backgrounds that the student body represents.The article that reasonated with me the most was, " Nice is Not enough" by Sonia Nieto. Nieto affirms that as an educator you must ask yourself "what it means to care about our students". Language Diversity

This week's reading talked about two topics that I always called my attention : Monolingualism and language diversity. In the article Educational Linguists, the author argues that the failure of the monolingual white community to assimilate to multilingual and multidialectal mainstream its causing a language gap. I completely agree with the author, however I must state that along the years I been seeing some improvement,  at my internship. A case that I found interesting was a seven years old boy who comes from a white monolingual family , but his parents wanted him to learn a new language. He was put in a dual language classroom, where most students were exposed to another language at home. The students need to be able to complete assignments, read and write in both languages: English and Portuguese.
